Managing Relief and Casual Workers

The Council recognises the need for a flexible workforce to be able to deliver key services and outcomes.  Using Relief Workers is a cost effective and appropriate method of supplementing our core workforce when either planned or unplanned resourcing gaps occur.  Please note that using Relief Workers is a more cost effective resourcing solution than using overtime or agency.

This Managing Relief Workers Procedure aims to ensure managers have a clear understanding of how Relief Workers should be engaged and managed across the organisation.

When can Relief Workers be used?

  • To provide short-term cover for resourcing gaps caused by planned or unplanned absence
  • To ensure service delivery is maintained
  • For specific project work / peaks in demand
